"Delay is natural to a writer. He is like a surfer—he bides his time. Waits for the perfect wave on which to ride in. He waits for the surge (of emotion? of strength? of courage?) that will carry him along." (E.B. White, The Paris Review Interviews, 1969)
But, my *real* comment is on the Library--isn't The Human Stain wonderful? I think it's Roth's best book since Operation Shylock: A Confession. The first 100 pp or so are kinda slow (as are all of Roth's books), but if you can stick it out, it's totally worth it. Wonderful read!
