For David

Otter Topography
Andrew Mara

You marked the return of the river otter
To the banks of the Red
Slipping, sinewy, beneath the surface.

Breaking my reverie
A long, cold, lifeless river
Newly dappled with sibilent splashing.

I don’t know you well,
Yet your silvery connection
Threaded with laughing shadows

Warm suspiration
Language, place, change
Cyclic re-expression recreating

Ancestral topography
Changing, moving, ebbing,
Imperceptible, but through your poetry.
